The Mermaidens Portrait Challenge

Thursday, September 12, 2019

One of my very favorite things about Mermaidens has been my journey with self portraiture. Over the years, learning how to take self portraits has become a playground for me to experiment with different emotions, makeup looks, and characters. One of my goals has always been to help make photography more accessible and share what I've learned whenever possible! So when Mermaidens reader Anna Mccabe suggested we start a portrait challenge, I thought it would be so much fun and a great way to engage with your work!

The challenge? Take a series of self portraits inspired by whatever you want! Whether it be an emotion, a character, or simply the most accurate portrayal of yourself. I would so love to see it using the hashtag #MermaidensPortraitChallenge!

I really love formatting my shoots with a Kodak Film Border by guidesandgrids that I edited into a contact sheet lookalike because it gives you a look at the whole series without taking up too much space. I uploaded templates here that you can use if you wish, but it isn't mandatory to be part of the challenge!

If you do partake in this challenge, pretty please tag your posts with #MermaidensPortraitChallenge so we can see them. I plan on joining the challenge myself - and I would love to repost a few of my favorites on instagram later this month! If you have any questions, feel free to slide into my dms on twitter, instagram, or my email. I'm so excited and hope you join us!
