MAKE-UP LOOK: Une Femme Est une Femme (1961)

Anna Karina's role as Angela in Jean-Luc Godard's UNE FEMME EST UNE FEMME (1961) has lived on in cinema and fashion history: her character's look - consisting of a wardrobe filled with primary colors, tights, and bows - has bewitched movie enthusiasts for decades.

Whilst I am not usually a fan of Jean-Luc Godard's movies, I can't help but be charmed by this one! Anna Karina is undeniably adorable, and I really love Jean-Paul Belmondo's performance as Karina and Jean-Claude Brialy's friend - not to mention the adorable 50s musicals nod!

The other day I decided it would be fun to do my make-up in a loosely based take on Angela's signature look in the movie.

I pinned the sides of my hair up, put on some bright blue eyeshadow (I used Make Up For Ever's Flash Color Pot no 20), applied black eyeliner in a cat eye style, and wore a red cardigan.

What movies to you turn to for beauty inspiration? And, as a side note, Happy New Year everybody! I hope you have an incredible 2012. ^^

  7. Happy New Year!
Such a gorgeous look - I think one of my beauty resolutions might have to be a little more daring, I love that blue.
Although not on film, my main beauty inspiration this year is Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks. I want her eyebrows!

  9. I think you nailed it, you look lovely! I've never watched the film before, but I've seen screencaps of it everywhere and I think I'll have to watch it now, if for her style alone.

  10. So cute! Anna Karina kind of looks like Kate Moss, but not as grumpy, haha. Have a great year, it has been so nice meeting you!

  11. Amazing job, as per, Kailey! You totally nailed Anna's look. I haven't seen Une femme est une femme yet, but I typical love Godard. She was brilliant/beautiful in Vivre sa vie and Bande a part and I liked Jean-Paul Belmondo in A bout de souffle so I'm sure I'll love this one - plus, who doesn't love 50s musical references? ;)

    P.S. Happy new year! xoxo

  14. The makeup looks fab on you! I think people should bring bright blue eyeshadow back! Even though i am more of a 50's fan the makeup in 60's films always looks more fun to try. Great post.

  41. I've been thinking a lot lately about doing a "Une Femme Est Une Femme" inspired makeup, I always loved how Angela wore such a strong eyeshadow without looking weird! You did an amazing work and you really look a lot like her :D

The movie "Alphaville" also by Jean-Luc Godard is probably the movie that inspires me the most when it comes to beauty!

  48. Do you have a cleft? I always thought clefts on girls are pretty. To add to the flattery, the blue eyeshadow stands out more with your black hair than her brown. :)

  49. You've got this look down! I just wear liquid eyeliner, boring, but quick (:
