Beauty Icon: Charlotte Free

Ever since I have become enthralled with Jem and the Holograms, candy-colored hair has become more and more appealing! Many people have taken to the pastel colored bottle, and at the helm of this trend is the 20-year-old model, Charlotte Free. Already a favorite among talented designers and photographers, Charlotte has walked the runway for Topshop Unique, Jeremy Scott, and Marchesa to name but a few, and will be covering Wonderland magazine's Nov/Dec issue.

I stumbled upon her by chance whilst making the rounds on tumblr, and was stunned by her famous curtain of pink tresses, sharp cheekbones, and piercing blue eyes.

The Bride of Frankenstein

This Halloween, I turned to one of my favorite horror films for costume inspiration. Elsa Lanchester's BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) is absolutely incredible - from her iconic look to her perfect performance, her take on the monster's bride is one of my favorite film characters.

This year, I attempted to recreate her costume using a thrifted wedding dress and fashioning white fabric into the mummy-like sleeves. Definitely not the best rendition of her look, but I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, especially considering I only had about a day to put it together! ^^

I must apologize for being so absent as of late, my internet has been wonky for the past week! What did you do for Halloween?

Favorite Films: The AristoCats (1970)

When I was a child, I would watch The AristoCats (1970) over and over again - I absolutely loved to be enveloped in the gorgeous color scheme, characters, and setting of the movie. Even now, The Aristocats ranks very high on my favorite films list, and I think the animation is vastly underrated. Here are some of my favorite stills from the movie!

Interview: Marlena from Self-Constructed Freak

I am elated to say that Marlena, the genius behind SELF-CONSTRUCTED FREAK, has agreed to be the first blogger questioned for our new Interview Feature! At her blog, Marlena shares her original style, awe-inspiring sewing skills, and excellent taste in music. Marlena has been a huge inspiration ever since I came across her blog, and I am so excited I got the chance to interview her!

I love your Little Mermaid dress - do you have a favorite Disney movie?
Aw, thanks! Pocahontas is my all-time favorite Disney movie. I totally wore out our VHS tape by watching it over and over and over again when I was little! A close second would be Beauty and the Beast.

What is your favorite part about the blogging community?
I love how even though we're all different--in terms of dressing, what types of music we love, writing styles, etc - we still somehow manage to inspire and influence each other in one way or another. I really like that.

Describe the adverage day in your life.
I go to bed late, wake up early, go to school (I take online classes so I'm basically at home or the library all day). In my free time I like go rummage around in thrift shops, alter & make clothes, and blog, of course! Other than that there's really not much to do where I live. My life is pretty uneventful, for the most part.

Do you remember what your first sewing project was?
The first thing I ever made (by hand) was one of those denim handbags that were sorta popular in the early '00s. You know, the ones that were supposed to look like a pair of jeans? If you watch the first couple episodes of Lizzie McGuire you're bound to see one. Anyway, I made one out of an old pair of jeans and wore it as a bookbag on my first day of second grade--my classmates thought I was so weird!

You are hosting a dinner party, and can invite anybody, living or dead. Who would you choose?
I'd love to have a tea party with the Bromley Contingent! ;)

How did you discover Siouxsie Sioux's music?
Well, it was more like I discovered her before I even heard her music. Years ago when I was a dorky little tweenager I checked out this book from the library by Lauraine Leblanc (it's about women and the "punk subculture") and she was mentioned in it a couple times. I looked her up, heard the music (Kaleidoscope to be more specific) and I've been a fan ever since!

Do you have any role models?
My mom! (wow, what a generic answer, right?) I always find myself hoping that I'll be even half as strong and intelligent as she is when I'm her age.

What are five things you are really loving at the moment?
The 'Halloweenie' episode of Pete & Pete, Vintage Polly Pockets, the first Nina Hagen Band album, gray lipstick, and Apple Cider tea. (kinda random but these are all off the top of my head! haha.)

What has been a highlight for you, blogging wise?
Hmm, I guess getting to make a tutorial for ROOKIE was pretty rad (and it wouldn't have happened without my blog!) I'm still OMG-ing over this. I can't help it! -.-

Who is your favorite JEM character?
I love Jerrica/Jem to bits, but, I'd have to say that Kimber and Aja are my favorites!

Do you ever have days where you just feel like wearing your pajamas?
Of course! But if I'm gonna be lazy with my outfit I always try to put on some sort of weird make-up (green lips, pink brows, etc.) to counteract the boring-ness of whatever it is I decide to wear. Or I just put on my hot pink boots. You can't look boring when your shoes are so bright!

Style Inspiration: Catwoman

With her mysterious personality, street smarts, and killer sense of style, Catwoman has become one of the most loved comic book characters of all time. The sometimes archenemy, sometimes lover of Batman has had more make-overs then one can count, and in honor of Halloween, I thought it would be fun to go over some of my favorite Catwoman incarnations.

N°1 JULIE NEWMAR
BATMAN TV SERIES (1966-1967)
With long blonde hair flowing behind her, Julie Newmar was the first actress to portray the cat burglar on-screen, and remains to be many people's favorite incarnation of the character. With her hourglass figure, outfitted splendidly in a purple bodysuit Newmar herself created, she stole and seduces Batman in 13 episodes, making her one of the most promient villains in the show. Of the experience, Newmar says: "It's an honor --- it really is -- that something stays for so long with people in the sweet depths of their feelings."

N°2 EARTHA KITT
BATMAN TV SERIES (1967-1968)

When Julie Newmar's Catwoman in the 60s BATMAN series needed to be replaced, producers thought of Eartha Kitt: "She was a cat woman before we ever cast her as Catwoman. She had a cat-like style. Her eyes were cat-like and her singing was like a meow" (says producer Charles FitzSimons). Eartha's Catwoman had a slick ponytail, distinctive voice, and a cat mask that perfectly accentuated her razor-sharp cheekbones. Though she only starred in a few episodes, she brought such an original take on the role that it became one of the most iconic and most loved portrayals of the character yet.

N°3 MICHELLE PFEIFFER
BATMAN RETURNS (1992)
Michelle Pfeiffer's broken-down secretary whose near death experience awoke the cat inside of her is my personal favorite version of Catwoman. Michelle's Catwoman prowls around in a skin-tight black vinyl catsuit, and smokey eyes with a bright red lipstick. When she isn't doing backflips and blowing up buildings, she quips one liner's such as "Life's a bitch, now so am I" before disappearing into the night.

Make-Up How To: Annie Potts in Pretty in Pink

Caroline suggested I do a tutorial of Iona's make-up in PRETTY IN PINK. Being a huge fan of striking make-up, I jumped at the challenge. This is my first tutorial, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

You Will Need:
- Eyeshadow primer (I'm using Laura Mercier Eye Basics in Cotton)
- Black mascara
- Eyelash Curler
- Black eyeliner
- Light purple eyeshadow (I'm using #5 in the Pixi Mermaid kit)
- Pink eyeshadow (I'm using Two Faced I Know What Boys Want)

STEP ONE:
Prep your eyes with your favorite primer, and begin covering your eyelid all the way to the brow bone in a light purple shadow. Next, use a pink shadow on the crease and brow bone.

STEP TWO:
Line your upper and lower lids with a fine pointed black eyeliner pencil - if you are more comfortable using liquid eyeliner, feel free to do so! End the lids with a cateye. Next, make a half-circle right above the crease. This can be rather tricky - I usually have to redraw the lines several times to get the shape I want.

STEP THREE:
Reapply light purple shadow to lid and pink shadow to crease and brow bone. Finish with mascara and curl your lashes.

Your end result should resemble something like this:
